a-Glucosidases which are essentially hydrolase have been found to catalyze also the trans-glucosylation which means the transfer action on the acceptors other than water. The action patterns of some a-glucosidases were compared with one another. Sacch. logos a-glucosidase, an a-1, 6-transglucosylase, showed the transfer activity of a glucosyl moiety to glucose and maltose to form isomaltose and panose mainly. Honey bee a-glucosidase, an a-1, 4-transglucosylase, produced maltotriose and phenyl-a-maltoside as the major products from maltose and phenyl-a-glucoside, respectively. However, buckwheat a-glucosidase, an a-1, 2-, a-1, 3- and a-1, 4-transglucosylase, catalyzed the predominant formation of kojibiose, nigerose and maltose from not only maltose but also soluble starch. Isomaltose was the minor product by buckwheat a-glucosidase. Such a multiplicity The anomalous reaction of honey bee a-glucosidase I on phenyl-a-glucoside was demonstrated, that is, the appreciable activation of only the transfer action depending on the concentration of substrate. A probable mechanism of the reaction of a-glucosidase was proposed, by which the hydrolysis and the transglucosylation were explained.
