Starch samples were prepared from the seeds of the six kinds of common trees in Japan: Ara-kashi, Quercus glauca Thunb. (Fagaceae); Suda-jii, Castanopsis cuspidata Schottky var. sieboldii Nakai (Fagaceae); Sotetsu, Cycas revoluta Thunb. (Cycadaceae); Icho, Ginkgo hiloba Linn. (Ginkgoaceae) ; Sharin-bai, Rhaphiolepis unbellata Makino (Rosaceae) ; Biwa, Eriohotrya japonica Lindl. (Rosaceae), by the yields of 34%, 32%, 23%, 31%, 38% and 24%, respectively. These starches were examined on granular size and shape, X-ray diffraction, iodine coloration, swelling power, solubility, amylography, digestibility of raw starches by glucoamylase, etc. and the characteristic features of them were described. It was observed among the starches examined that the characteristic properties of the starch became closer among the plants located in close taxonomical relation. Regarding the values of digestibility, swelling power, solubility and amylogram, the starches of Ara-kashi and Suda-jii seemed to be of the tuberous starch type, Sharin-bai and Biwa seemed to be of the cereal starch type and Sotetsu and Icho intermediate between these two types. Among these starches only Icho starch was "single-granules, " and Biwa starch showed especially low viscosity on amylogram.
