抄録

New cytodiagnosis classifications for thyroid follicular neoplasms are discussed. These categories consists of benign, indeterminate, suspected malignancy, and malignant. Until now, follicular neoplasms have usually been categorized as “suspicious” in thyroid cytology. However, only a few malignant tumors are actually found in follicular neoplasms (about 10-20%). In this new classification system, a new, “indeterminate” category was established for cases such as follicular neoplasms. Our trial using the new classification categories revealed that the ratios of malignancy in the indeterminate and suspected malignancy categories were 10.5% and 50%, respectively. These results confirm the utility of the new classification categories.
