Abstract

A new hardness-testing apparatus made for the purpose of making a research on dynamic hardness and its accuracy are described. This apparatus can test dynamic hardness by using various values of impact energy and velocity, and various shapes of indenters. The most important part of the apparatus is a pendulum supported by ball bearings and fitted with an indenter at its one end, and its moment can be altered by adjusting attachment weight. In order to give a test piece an impact, the height of the pendulum can be adjusted by an electromagnetic mechanism. The height of its rebound is recorded on a photographic paper by means of an optical lever which magnifies the movement of the pendulum by about ten times. From the results of the twenty two times tests with a cone-shaped indenter repeated under a definite impact condition for a hardness standard block of Hs 21, it was found that the dispersion of the heights of rebound and that of the diameters of indentation are 3.4% and 0.7% respectively.
