Abstract

The measurements of physical growth in 408 school children were done from Juni to August in 1971 at Riam-Kanan, Bandjarbaru and Martapura in south Kalimantan. The children in Kalimantan have a remarkably shorter body length and lighter body weight than Japanese. (Table 3 and 4). The present physique is considered by undeveloped social siturations such as poor nutrition, tropical climate, economical conditions, manners and customs and so on. But the physical growth in young school children becomes gradually higher. The health check for sound upbringing of school children was attempted in Juli 1971 at Aranio school in Riam-Kanan. The results are as table 5 and 6. Until now school health is not controlled by medical doctor in Kalimanan. It was one method of community-Based Approaches of health services. Preventive injection in school-children are in table 7. An immunization program is more necessary by the public health service. Questionary was made to parent on maternal and child health, because infant mortality rate and live birth rate etc. in Kalimantan were not done until now. The average number of child (mother are from 25 to 54) is in 6.5 as Table 11. The death of the children is very higher than Japanese. Health examination of mother and child in Kalimantan is still not popular enough at the present time. But improvement of the maternal and child health is coming slowly. The result of the past anamnesis of school children by paperquetion (enquête) to parent is demonstrated in Table 12. Inflammation of respiratory tract, Malaria and communicable diseases were frequently known. The morbidity (Table 13) was based on the detailed analysis of medical care and treatment at Riam-Kanan under 15 years from January to Juni 1971. Avitaminosis and anemia were found due to poor nutrition. The most frequent important diseases in children are as follows ; Bronchitis and Pneumonia, Intestinal infection, Tuberculosis, Skin diseases and Malaria. At last present health care and medical needs in south kalimantan were discussed.
