Abstract
Numerical simulations were conducted to examine hydrodynamic characteristics of a fringing reef under typhoon condition and their formation mechanism by using a shallow water turbulent flow model, SDS-Q3D model. Topographic circulation effect was found to surpass wind-induced current effect around a big channel even under a strong wind condition. The wind-induced current component showed appreciable spatial non-uniformity over the reef, especially around the big channel, where the wind-induced current appeared negligibly small. This is because of a nonlinear effect via bottom friction.
