A bone mineral analyzer (BMA) was used to measure the bone mineral content (BMC) of metacarpal bone (Mc) of racehorses. A total of 28 samples of the bone were collected from 15 horses. As a result, the BMA, of which the radioactive source was 241Am, was characterized by its high accuracy and reproducibility. The same pattern of distribution of the bone mineral content/bone width (BMC/BW) value determined at 1cm intervals along the axis of the bone was obtained from all the samples. There was no difference in BMC/BW value between the right and left Mc. There was a significant positive correlation between the BMC/BW value of the middle position of the diaphysis, which was made of compact bone, and the number of races run (No. of races), the time interval between first and last race run (time interval) or body weight in the last race. In addition, the BMC/BW value increased with the advance in age up to 59 months. On the other hand, the BMC/BW value was high at 1cm proximal to the distal articular surface (1cm position), which was made of cancellous bone. There was a significant positive correlation between BMC/BW value of 1cm position and the No. of races, the time interval and age in the last race.
