A blue-colored, red-fluorescent protein, previously isolated from the digestive juice of silkworm larvae in this laboratory, was now shown to have a potent photosensitizing action in the visible light-dependent destruction of L-tryptophan. The protein was inactive towards histidine and nucleic acid bases under the identical, conditions. These results were discussed in relation to the mechanism of virus inactivating and rice plant withering actions of this protein.<br>Incubation of mulberry leaf chloroplast fraction with mid-gut extract, but not digestive juice, from silkworm larvae gave rise to an appearance of the characteristic light absorption at 600-605mμ and red fluorescence in the subsequently purified fraction from the incubated mixture. This fact was taken to indicate that the protein was formed in the larval mid-gut from an unknown precursor(s) contained in the chloroplast fraction of ingested mulberry leaves and then liberated into the digestive juice.
