Gastric juice was collected from frozen silkworm larvae from its natural position in the mid-gut. The gastric juice thus obtained exhibited strong basicity in the mid portion, but was somewhat neutral at both the anterior and posterior extremities of the alimentary canal. The low pH value of gastric juice from the anterior part of the mid-gut shifted to higher values when the silkworms were starved for a certain period of time.<br>Measurements of pH were carried out on gastric juice from silkworms reared on various artificial diets by modifying the composition of salt mixtures so as to change the ratio between organic and inorganic anions under isotonic conditions. The gastric juice of silkworms fed on organic-salt-rich diets exhibited higher pH values than that of silkworms fed on inorganic-salt-rich diets.<br>Titrations of anion and cation contents of gastric juice from respectively reared animals revealed that samples from silkworms reared on organic-salt-rich diets contained lower concentrations of anions than those of silkworms reared on inorganic-salt-rich diets.<br>It is suggested that the absorption and metabolism of organic anions in the alimentary canal are responsible for the high basicity of gastric juice in silkworms.
