抄録

The preparation of soluble fibroin power and several related factors wkich affect the water solubility of fibroin are presented in this paper.<br>The solubility of fibroin varied with the methods of treatment of silk (hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid, hydrolysis with enzyme). In this study, the powder which was produced by fibroin hydrolysis and showed a molecular weight of more than 10, 000 was almost insoluble. When the powder is mainly composed of crystalline regions or contains a large number of hydrophobic amino acid residues, even a powder with a molecular weight less than 10, 000 remains insoluble. On the contrary, when the power mainly consists of amorphous regions and contains many hydrophilic groups, its solubility increases. It was shown that the difference in fibroin solubility is related to the amino acid composistion and higher order sturcture.
