Radical Polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in the presence of barium sulfate (BaSO4) and inorganic oxides in water using 2, 2′-azobis (2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride or potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. A mechanism of encapsulation of inorganic powder with resulting polymer was investigated from the viewpoint of surface chemistry by varying the surface potential of inorganic powder and the ionic terminal groups of polymer. In various polymerization systems, encapsulation proceeded preferably when the inorganic powder and the end groups of polymer were charged oppositely. In each case, electrostatic interaction between inorganic powder surface and terminal ionic groups of polymer was shown to play an important role in the encapsulation at an early stage of polymerization. It was also suggested inKPS/BaSO4 system that the chemical affinity between the end groups and BaSO4contributed to the encapsulation besides electrostatic interaction. From these results, encapsulation mechanism was discussed in relation to the concept for the polymer particle nucleation in emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization.
