Work space of airport controllers was checked by 10 ergonomic specialists and 12 engineering students by means of three ergonomic checklists: A-list by Dunlap Associates of U. S. A., H-list by TNO Working Group of Netherlands, and N-list by Committee of the Japan Ergonomics Reserch Society, a modified one of the TEA-list. The students' group tended to drop significant items, compared with specialists, especially when qualitative evaluations characteristic to N-list were in question. On the other hand, A-list having many quantitative questions did not seem always favourable because they limited the scope of checking, some important points and item-interrelations being left unchecked. The insufficient space of controllers for their variable postures and leg room resulting apparently from disturbed vision was best checked out by H-list, owing to its easiness to select countermeasures and its flexibility in finding problems relating to the workers' loading, though some checkers were apt to skip certain items by way of rough question branching. Thus for an ergonomic checklist, in addition to its comprehensiveness of items, corrective functions with wide flexibility and multiple checking by specialists seem essential to provoke the checkers insightful consideration on various possible aspects of human load.
