Aromatic polyester-hydrazide, having good light-fastness, flame-resistance and nonmelting, were synthesized from isophthaloyl-dihydrazide, terephthaloyl dichloride and 2, 2-bis (3, 5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (TBA). Molding properties of these copolymers and the various physical and chemical characteristics of fibers and films were estimated. The results are summarized as follows:
1) Molding properties.
Polyester-hydrazides were easily dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide and could be spun in water (dry tenacity 2.3g/d; dry elongation, 14%; initial strength, 56g/d). On the other hand, colourless and tough films were obtained by dry casting method.
2) Flammability.
The LOI value of this copolymer containing about 9 wt. % bromine was 31.5 and was selfextinguishable.
3) Light-fastness.
After the irradiation with a Fade-O-meter for 40 hours, they did not show any yellowish colour and fiber properties stayed unchanged.
4) Use as thermostable film.
This copolymer exhibited an excellent electric insulation (139kV/mm) and could be used continuously at 155°C.
5) Use for a reverse osmosis membrane.
The salt rejection was about 95% when the flux rate was 700 l/m2/D and polyester-hydrazide exhibited excellent properties as a reverse osmosis membrane.
