Abstract

We have developed and evaluated the effectiveness of a hair growth promoter containing 0.5% CTP on 86 male volunteers using double blind test. In comparison with a placebo group (43 casses), the group of male volunteers receiving the promoter (CTP group, 43 cases) exhibited the following improvements at 16 weeks after initiation of CTP application: 1) decreased sparsity of hard hair, 2) increased population density of lanugo hair and 3) reduced degree of scaling. Furthermore, such improvement was much more pronounced 16 weeks after initiation as compared to 8 weeks after treatment. Concerning the general degree of improvement, the placebo group showed only 2 cases, but CTP group showed 12 cases of improvement or slight improvement which was statistically significant. We counted the number of hairs which fell out after washing and divided them into those with a diameter of less than 40μm and those above 40μm. We found that the total number of fallen hairs above 40μm was significantly decreased 16 weeks after the initiation of treatment and this decrease was statistically significant only in the CTP group. As an evaluation of general effectiveness, the placebo group showed only 3 cases (7%) being slightly effective while the CTP group showed 20 such cases (47%) and this difference was statistically significant. There were no recognizable side effects in either the placebo or CTP groups. In addition we have examined the effectiveness of CTP on alopecia areata and alopecia diffusum total in 10 cases whose age was in the range of 24 to 61 years old. We have found improvement on both sparsity of hard hair and density of velus hair in the region of alopecia areata suggesting the hair growth promoter CTP apparently enhanced new hair growth in these regions. We concluded that an evaluation of effectiveness using this hair growth promoter requires an appropriate observation duration of 3 to 5 months. There were no cases exhibiting side effects nor reverse reactions.
