親潮潜流中の<I>Sagitta elegans</I> <I>Sagitta elegans</I> in the Oyashio Undercurrent

Abstract

<I>S. elegans</I>は亜寒帯水の典型的な毛顎動物である. 最近本種が大量に相模湾中層水で採集され, 親潮潜流が相模湾内に入っていることが実証された. 本種はさらに駿河湾にも出現し, 親潮潜流が小笠原海領の西側にも及んでいることを示した. 相模湾では大体300m (11℃) 以深に出現し, この水況は本州東方海表層における本種の分布南限の水況と一致する. 相模湾中層水における本種の個体数は親潮表層水の1/1,000以下である. 相模湾では体長は一般に大きく, 10mm以下の幼体は見当らない.

<I>Sagitta elegans</I>, a typical Arctic chaetognath, is abundantly found in the inter mediate water of Sagami Bay at depths exceeding 300m in winter. The temperature at 300m depth is 11°C, and it well agrees with that on the southern boundary of the Oyashio east of Northern Japan. The population of <I>S. elegans</I> in this bay is decreased to a several-hundredth of that in the Oyashio proper. It is assumed from the facts that the Bonin Ridge does not always make a strict barrier to the western extension of the Oyashio plankton, and that the intermediate water of Sagami, Bay is partly originated from the Oyashio water, although it may be considerably diluted on its way to the bay.<BR>The extension of the Oyashio undercurrent is weaker in offshore areas south of Japan than in coastal areas such as Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay and Enshunada, judging from the appearance of <I>S. elegans, S. scrippsae</I> and coldwater copepods indicative of the Oyashio.
