抄録

We demonstrated the effect of cefbuperazone (CBPZ) on superoxide anion (O₂^-) production by neutrophils in 14 patients with underlying diseases and 3 patients with no underlying disease who were given CBPZ. The following results were obtained.<BR>1) After CBPZ treatment in the patients with lung cancer, O₂^- production by neutrophils increased remarkably when the antibiotic was clinically effective.<BR>2) In the patients with underlying chronic lung or cerebrovascular diseases, and in those with no underlying disease, CBPZ treatment resulted in enhancement or suppression of neutrophil O₂^- production in cases below or above the normal range before treatment.<BR>3) After CBPZ treatment, cellular and humoral immunity and the complement system were not affected.<BR>These results suggest that the effect of CBPZ on infection in patients with underlying diseases may be due to augmenting or modulating neutrophil O₂^- production.
