抄録

We investigated the therapeutic efficacy and safety of a new oral penem antibiotic, SY5555, in ten patients with acute pharyngitis, acute pharyngotonsillitis, acute bronchitis, COPD complicated with bacterial infection, acute pyelonephritis, and cystitis. SY5555 was administered orally in a dose of 150 to 300 mg daily for six to fifteen days. Two patients were excluded from the evaluation of clinical efficacy because of uncertain symptoms before administration of the drug. The clinical response of eight patients to the new antibiotic seemed to be excellent in 1, good in 6 and poor in 1.
Two species of bacteria, Escherichia coliandEnterococcussp., were identified as causative organisms in the urine from two patients. Those two bacteria were eradicated after administration of SY5555. Diarrhea occurred in one of ten patients, but was improved by decreasing the dosage of SY5555.
There were no remarkable changes in laboratory findings among the ten patients receiving SY5555. In conclusion, it can be considered that SY5555 has high therapeutic efficacy and safety in clinical use.
