We have already reported that only the ilium had the most sufficient bone shape and volume, in terms of both thickness and height, to be used for reconstruction of the mandible. The authors further herein report the results of oral functional reconstruction in 15 patients, using vascularized iliac crest (VIC) and implant-anchored prostheses, who underwent reconstruction of the mandible.<br>The procedure used for resection of the mandible was unilateral segmentectomy in 8 patients, bilateral segmentectomy in 5, and hemimandibulectomy in 2. These patients were given implantanchored prostheses, and 46 Brånemark Mark II s. 10 Brånemark Standards. 7 ITI Bonefit implants, and 2 ITI Hollow Cylinders were inserted via an intra-oral approach. After treatment with an implant-anchored prosthesis, masticatory function was improved rather than wearing conventional dentures, but speech function was not improved. Two implants had to be removed at a early time because of failure of osseointegration. The remaining 63 implants showed successful integration in prosthetic rehabilitation, at a maximum follow-up time of 7 years.
