In order to investigate mechanisms of ink transfer in screen printing, we have developed an apparatus, in which the relation between an amount of transfered ink and squeegee depressing can be obtained.
The amount of transfered ink on a substrate varied with squeezing pressure accompanied by geometric distortion of screen fabric. At weak squeegee depressing, the ink can be deposited on the substrate even though the screen printing form does not contact with substrate. In this condition, the quantity of deposited ink is not so little, and the transfer process is unstable. With increasing squeezing pressure, the amount of transfered ink on the substrate increases and then decreases exponentially after showing a maximum. With increasing squeegee depressing, the geometric distorsion or compressive deformation of screen becomes more remarkable and the theoretical color volume of screen printing form decreases. However, the deformation seems to attain an equilibrium state and the quantity of ink deposition may be taken to an equilibrium value.
The relations between amount of transfered ink and squeezing pressure can be characterized by the two particular values quantitatively. One is the squeezing pressure required to get to the equilibrium deformation of screen and the other is the equilibrium quantity of ink transfered per unit area. The former seems to depend on screen tension, elastic modulus of screen materials, and off-contact distance and latter seems to depend on theoretical color volume of screen printing form, angle between squeegee and substrate, and velocity of squeegee during printing and viscosity of printing ink. From the experimental results, the mechanism of ink transfer seems to be affected by ink rheology together with the mechanical properties of screen and squeegee.
