The antimicrobial activity of doxycycline (DOTC) was determined against 157 strains of anaerobic bacteria mostly recent clinical isolates by a plate dilution method using GAM agar as culture medium. Seventy per-cent of the tested was inhibited by 25 mcg/ml or less of DOTC.
The antimicrobial activity of DOTC was greater than that of oxytetracycline.
While the antimicrobial activity was comparable among DOTC, aminobenzylpenicillin, cephalothin and lincomycin against Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus, DOTC was only antibiotic which had the minimal inhibitory concentration of 25 mcg/ml or less against all strains of Bacteroides and Sphaerophorus.
The results of the present investigations indicate as well as previous observations that DOTC has a favorable antimicrobial activity against all species of anaerobic organisms. This characteristics of DOTC may be advantageous for clinical therapy of infections due to anaerobic organisms.
