Abstract

Extrusion tests were carried out on 6063 alloy ingots in which Mg2Si particles were precipitated by isothermal precipitation treatment or by slow cooling after homogenizing. Extrudability of ingots was estimated by the extrusion pressure, the critical extrusion rate to cause tearing on the surface of extrusions and mechanical properties of extrusions. The principal results obtained are summarized as follows.
(1) Coarse particles of Mg2Si, particularly precipitated at about 400°C, reduce the extrusion pressure.
(2) Such coarse particles are the cause of tearing, thus, reduce the critical extrusion rate.
(3) Coarse particles of Mg2Si, particularly precipitated by slow cooling from homogenizing temperature, can not be disolved completely during extrusion process, and thus reduce tensile strength of extrusions after artificial aging.
