Abstract

The clinical and bacteriological efficacy and safety of ritipenem acoxil, a new oral penem antibiotic, were evaluated in 10 patients with respiratory tract infections: one with acute bronchitis, four with chronic bronchitis, one with bronchiectasis, one with lung abscess, and three with pneumonia. The efficacy was excellent in six patients, good in one, absent in one, and impossible to judge in two. Causative bacteria were isolated in three cases and they all disappeared after the treatment. There was a side effect of slight diarrhea in one case. Another case showed slight increases in S-GOT and S-GPT on the clinical laboratory tests.
