The purpose of this experiment was to clarify the most suitable analytic section for evaluating the stability of the masticatory movement in gumi-jelly chewing. Twenty healthy subjects (10 males, 10 females) in their twenties were asked to chew gumi-jelly on their habitual chewing side for 20 seconds and the mandibular movement was recorded by a MKG. The first 30 cycles of mastication were classified into 21 series of 10 consecutive cycles. The SD/OD (standard deviation/opening distance) of the opening lateral, closing lateral, and vertical components and the CV (coefficient of variation) of the opening, closing, occluding, and cycle time were calculated for each series and compared among the series. The SD/OD for the opening lateral, closing lateral, and vertical components were smallest for the 6th, 5th, and 5th series respectively. The CV for the opening, closing, occluding, and cycle time were smallest for the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 5th series respectively. Furthermore the values of the 5th series were very close to those of the 6th and 7th series. From these results it was concluded that the best suited section for analyzing and evaluating the stability of masticatory movement was the ten cycles starting from the fifth cycle of mastication.
