Background: It is not obvious whether chewing training affects psychological status of human.<BR>Objective: To evaluate the effect of chewing training with original gumdrops on psychological status and oral function of children in an elementary school.<BR>Method: Twenty-one children were assigned to an intervention group (n=11) and a control group (n=10). Children in the intervention group were requested to chew and eat 9 gumdrops per day for 28 days.<BR>Measurement outcomes: Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic Test, Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (CMAS), bite force, salivary flow rate, questionnaire in relation to lifestyle.<BR>Results: The first half score and the average of the total score in Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic Test were significantly improved after intervention in the intervention group (p<0.05). Bite forces were reduced significantly in the control group (p<0.01). In CMAS and salivary flow rate, there were no significant differences. Bite forces of eight children who had felt tired at meals in the pre-intervention period were lower than those who had not (n=13) (p<0.05).<BR>Conclusions: Chewing training for 28 days was suggested to improve positive attitude of children and to control the decline of children's bite forces. Oral function of children was shown to be associated with their lifestyles.
