The objective of this work is to reveal relationship between masticatory ability and physical characteristic, habit of exercise and hereditary factor. We have collected in masticatory ability data from 2, 104 subjects aged 3∼97 years old (male: 767, Female: 1, 337) by the chewinggum method. We also use a questionnaire that asked about height and weight, exercise habit, having a background in sport activities, in junior high school or high school etc. and filiations. From these masticatory data and their physical characteristic, exercise habit and filiations, we investigated the influence of physical characteristic, as body mass index (BMI), or habit of exercise or hereditary factor on masticatory ability.
Significant correlation was not found between masticatory ability and body mass index. But people who had habitual physical activity showed higher masticatory ability than sedentary people at any age in females and males except in the ages between 19 to 29 years old. It has shown that the higher masticatory ability in the group who have the habit of exercise. This observation suggests that the continuous exercise is effective to keep or elevate masticatory ability. In order to clarify the influence of hereditary factor or masticatory ability, we investigated probability of coincident of masticatory ability level within a filiation or matrimony. From these results, there was no relationship between husband and wife, but the relevance was found among parents and children.
Therefore, it is thought that the physical factors do not affect the masticatory ability, but the hereditary factors and the environmental factors affect the masticatory ability.
