Fluid is assumed to be perfect fluid. Both surface long waves and interfacial long waves are those with very small amplitude, and the mixing of upper and lower layer fluids is neglected. Under these assumptions, the equation for the relationship between surface long waves and interfacial long waves in two basins, of which only the depth changes stepwise (fundamental equation) was derived, and its validity was confirmed by comparing with the theoretical solution, analytieal solution and experimental results. Moreover, on the basis of the fundamental equation, the method of calculating the interfacial long waves excited by surface long waves (tidal waves) in a two-dimensional, two-layer basin, of which the depth changes continuously, was discussed, and its validity was verified by comparing with the experimental values.
The features of the calculating method described above and the characteristics of the surface long waves and interfacial long waves obtained from the calculated results are as follows.
1) Surface long waves can be calculated separately regardless of the presence of interfacial long waves.
2) In a basin with constant depth, interfacial long waves are not excited by surface long waves.
3) In a basin with two layers of different depth, interfacial long waves are excited by surface long waves without fail, as far as the surface long waves become superposed waves and form a loop at the position of water depth change.
4) Both surface long waves and interfacial long waves are affected more severely by the change of water depth as their period is longer. From this fact, it was suggested that the surface waves and interfacial waves with such long period as tide are reflected at the coast.
