Portland cement and lime, essential materials for construction and stabilization of soft soils, are said to discharge a large amount of carbon dioxide in the production process. Alternative construction and stabilization materials which enable the decrease in the use of cement and lime, and hence lowers the carbon dioxide emission are strongly desired. Recently geopolymer which is a term covering a class of synthetic aluminosilicate materials has been developed by Joseph Davidvits and is used predominantly as a replacement for Portland cement and to solidify sludge polluted by heavy metals. However, so far there have not been much study on the geopolymer for the improvement of strength for soft clay as a construction material for lining of excavated waterways, and so on.<BR>In this research the coal ash which is called as the fly ash and is known to be pozzolanic in nature and reacts with calcium hydroxide and alkali to form calcium silicate hydrates is used as the filler. And the sodium silicate in the solution is used as the activator. Geopolymer is made by mixing these filler and activator and is used to stabilize by mixing with mud excavated from deteriorated creeks in Saga Plain used to stabilize soft Ariake clay. The mechanical and chemical characteristics of mud mixed with various ratio of mixture of fly ash-based geopolymer are examined to clarify the solidification characteristics. This research also aims the effective use and resource recovery of the fly ash which is an industrial waste material from power station.
