New Numerical Method for Calculation of Flow in a Long Region with Free Surface

A new numerical method that is suitable for the calculation of flows in a very long region with free surface is proposed. River flow is a typical example of such flows that is related to disaster and its prevention. The flow variables are expressed as sum of those of the main flow that is obtained by solving one-dimensional equation analytically and their variations. Applying this method to incompressible flows in a very long pipe, we obtained good results. In this study, this method is extended for calculating the flow in a very long region with free surface, and examples of open channel flow with and without confluence are computed. For both cases, the conservation of mass of fluid is well satisfied that is very difficult to obtain by the standard MAC method.
