Treatment with zinc sulfate was given to 40 patients with cutaneous diseases, such as acne pustulosa, psoriasis vulgaris, alopecia totalis, Buerger’s disease and eczema seborrhoicum, in which the serum zinc level was low. With the administration of zinc sulfate, many in the responsive group showed a marked increase in the serum zinc level, while those in the unresponsive group showed either a slight increase or a decrease in the serum zinc. It seemed to be difficult to determine which cutaneous disorder is the indication for zinc therapy, because of insufficient number of cases in which pronounced clinical improvement was obtained. Side effects observed during zinc therapy include gastrointestinal discomfort (6 cases, 15%), decrease of serum iron concentration (4 cases, 44%) and decrease of serum copper concentration (5 cases, 42%).
