Abstract

A new type geogrid-reinforced soil wall (GRSW) combined with soil cement was developed. Though higher stability of GRSW was found from the past studies, little is known about the seismic stability so far. Therefore, the centrifuge shaking table tests under the centrifugal acceleration of 50G were carried out to study the behavior of the new type GRSW during earthquake. In the centrifuge tests, deformation of the wall could be measured by using a CCD camera and image processing system. GRSW combined with soil cement wall exhibited high seismic stability as compared with the conventional GRW and the retaining wall made of soil cement. At the high seismic intensity, however, a tension crack was observed at the top of the soil cement wall. Such a tension crack was stopped by mixing short fibers into the soil cement. As a result, the reinforced soil wall achieved very high seismic stability.
