Abstract

Waste plasterboard is generated in vast quantities from demolition of buildings and houses. If waste plasterboard can be effectively utilized as a construction material, the problems of waste plasterboard disposal and natural resources for construction may be solved. Bassanite is produced by heating gypsum obtained from waste plasterboard, at temperatures 130°C or more. To investigate the effects of bassanite addition on shear characteristics of cement stabilized soils, consolidated undrained and drained triaxial compression tests were performed on Kaolin clay with different bassanite contents. The test results show that the angle of shearing resistance is approximately constant, irrespective of the cohesion of the specimens increases with increasing bassanite addition. The effects of bassanite contents on stress-strain behavior of cement-stabilized soils are also quantified. These properties make bassanite produced from waste plasterboard useful as a soil improvement material.
