Abstract
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is closely associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV infection in NPC is monoclonal, suggesting that EBV is a causative agent of NPC. This association of NPC with EBV is not only an interest of virologist but also an attractive target of clinical use including diagnosis and treatment for head and neck surgeon. Both serum EBV titer and in situ hybridization for EBERs are already in clinical use. Quantification of serum EBV-DNA reflects disease course, which is expected to get clinically available. On the other hand, there have been several literatures describing EBV-targeting treatments. However, induction of viral lytic cycle as well as anti-viral compound is a candidate for EBV-based treatment of NPC.
