Abstract

This paper describes a method for detecting the pigmented skin areas from a facial image. First, the features and factors of pigmented skin are shown. Second, we measure the surface spectral reflectances from the pigmented skin areas and non-pigmented skin areas. Then, the concentrations of pigments including melanin and hemoglobin are calculated from measurements. We show that the pigmented skin is caused by melanin and hemoglobin. Third, we propose an algorithm for detecting the pigmented skin areas from a facial image. An imaging system for capturing facial images is shown. Then, we determine the pigmented skin areas based on dermatologist diagnosis. Moreover, we determine the two-principal plane which is characterizing the skin color distribution. It is shown that the histogram of skin color in this plane can be divided into the non-pigmented area and pigmented area. The pigmented skin area can be detected effectively by cluster detection. In experiments using four female facial images, we show that the detection results of pigmented areas agree with dermatologist diagnosis.<br>
