Abstract

This paper seeks to clarify the spatial composition of the public retail markets of Hsinchu, Yilan and Chiayi which were established in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period and their formative process as a commercial urban block. The main buildings of Hsinchu and Yilan markets had been built by brick with a splendid western-style façade at the end of Meiji era, and formed the new urban axes in collaboration with the road plan under the Municipal Improvement Act. On the other hand, Chiayi east market has been located in the center of the walled city with the succession of the traditional urban context. At the beginning of Showa era, these markets lost the symbolic role as an urban core, on the contrary to the enhancement of market functions. The shop houses for rent with Teng-a-kha(an arcade) created the modern townscape. Especially the new building types which integrated the shop houses along the street and the inner shops of market were planned in Chiayi.
