Abstract

Objective: To compare the long-term outcome of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (LRN) with open radical nephrectomy (ORN) in pT1N0M0 renal cell carcinoma(RCC) patients.
Materials and Methods: Between March 1993 and March 2012, 113 patients who underwent LRN and 25 patients who underwent ORN were retrospectively evaluated, excluding patients with dialysis and von Hippel Lindau diseases.
Results: The median follow-up period was 66.7 months (range: 0.3 to 228.0). There was no significant difference in clinicopathological factors except for the tumor size. The overall survival rate of patients receiving LRN was superior to that of those undergoing ORN. The cancer-specific and recurrence-free survival rates demonstrated no significant difference between patients treated with LRN and ORN.
Conclusions: The long-term outcome in patients with LRN was almost the same as that in those with ORN for the treatment of pT1N0M0 RCC.
