Abstract
"Shared Space" is a new way of designing public space where traffic is no longer dominate but other functions, pedestrian and bicycle, are equal to cars. The signs in "Shared Space" are removed or decreased. Research on "Shared Space" is considered as one of "way-finding". The purpose of this research is to clarify whether "Shared Space" is appropriate for Japan. On this Part 1, we discuss (1) concept of "Shared Space", (2) difference between "woonerf" or "living street" and "Shared Space", (3) filed study at Bohmte in Germany and (4) Hans Monderman.
