Redox-active metal-assembled conjugated complexes were obtained by control of coordination modes. The π-conjugated molecule, N,N'-bis(4'-dimethylaminophenyl)-1,4-benzoquinone diimine (L), was introduced to the palladium(II) complex bearing one interchangeable coordination site, affording the conjugated homobimetallic palladium(II) complex. The single-crystal X-ray structure determination of the conjugated homobimetallic palladium(II) complex reveals that two palladium complex units are bridged by the quinonediimine moiety to form the C2-symmetrical 2:1 complex in anti configuration. On the other hand, alternative coordination array of L and a palladium(II) complex having two coordination sites led to the formation of the conjugated polymeric complex or the conjugated trimetallic macrocycle depending on the coordination mode. The single-crystal X-ray structure determination of the conjugated trimetallic macrocycle indicates the coordination of both quinonediimine nitrogens to palladium centers in syn configuration and that the quinonediimine planes are inclined in the range of 28° to the plane defined by the six nitrogen atoms of the quinonediimine, creating an open cavity with different faces.
