Abstract

The influence of dissolved oxygen on corrosion behavior of coated steel in 3% by weight sodium chloride solution was investigated. In order to estimate the character of protective coatings, current interrupter method was applied successfully which was used in our previous work.
Corrosion behavior of coated mild steel was compared with that of uncoated steel by use of electro chemical technique such as corrosion rate measurement and electrode potential measurement as well as current interrupter method, and the effect of dissolved oxygen on corrosion behavior of coated mild steel was disclosed.
Corrosion current of coated mild steel measured by current interrupter method was several times larger in the presence of dissolved oxygen than in the absence of dissolved oxygen. The electrode potential of coated mild steel shifted to the noble direction in the presence of dissolved oxygen and to the less noble in the absence of dissolved oxygen. Furthermore it was found that the rate of the Potential change was more rapid during aeration compared with that during deaeration.
