Abstract

A photographic book Ken Domon’s “Children of Chikuho” was published as a 100 yen photographic book expecting that many people could buy it. It was printed with 75 lpi on coarse paper of B5 size. There was an alternative for Domon to publish in the series of “Iwanami Shashin Bunko”. It was a 100 yen photographic book, too, but was printed with 150 lpi on coated paper of B6 size. The pictures were smaller and their attached captions were more detailed in comparison with the “Children of Chikuho”. In the present study a new version of “Children of Chikuho” in the “Iwanami Shashin Bunko” style from the point of view of image quality and layout was made. Using SD method, the impression of the new version was compared with that received from the original. The results clarified Domon’s intention of the Book design by showing that the “Iwanami Shashin Bunko” style version gave the impression of “explanatory” and “detailed” under the factor “impression of photographic book”, whereas the original gave the impression of “strong” and “convincing” under the factor “sympathy with children”.
