Abstract

The government urges an “Education of Yakugai” (lawsuit on drug induced suffering) in recent years. This research examines the process in which hemophiliacs become infected with HIV casedby imported HIV-contaminated blood products and got involved in series of the lawsuits from 1989 to 1996 against the Japanese government and the pharmaceutical companies. Based on interviews conducted for this research, I analyzed how the lawsuit movements constructed the notion of “Yakugai”. The HIV infection is not the only factor to create “Yakugai HIV”. The infections by blood coagulation products, such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, had different impacts on hemophiliacs from time to time. For the deceased hemophiliacs, survivor of hemophiliacs with HIV were charged with a mission from strong outrage and indignation. The results of this research are situated in “approach”, which focuses on explaining the mechanism of the quality of social movement.
