Abstract

Three cases of eosinophilic pustular folliculitis are reported. The skin test for candida antigen or mite antigen was positive in all three cases. Newly formed pustules were found at the area tested by mite antigen (closed patch test technique) and the specific histamine release from patient leukocytes incubated with mite antigen was detected in one. A newly formed pustule appeared at the area injected with candida antigen in another one patient. Giemsa stain of the pus smear, toluidine blue stain of the Epon embedded thin section, and light and electron microscopic examinations of the skin lesion revealed that basophiles had infiltrated the pustule. These findings suggest the possibility that the Type I allergic reaction may be involved in the histogenesis of eosinophilic pustular folliculitis and the antigen may be epidermal elements and exteroceptive substances such as bacteria, fungus and mite.
