Abstract

Road space reallocation, such as removal of elevated road or underground bypass, is popular in cities of developed countries. In intermediate ring road of Munich (Germany), by a result of referendum in 1996, three new underground tunnels have constructed since 2000 and a part of surface spaces have turned into a greenery park. This study aims to examine background and meaning of this tunnel project. It also examines how other environmental improvement projects of this ring road have influenced on roadside areas. As a result, it is found that report of citizens' group had deeply related new master plan of this ring road, and also found that comprehensive program of environmental project had improved quality of roadside area significantly.
