Abstract
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive technique for measuring neural activities in the living human brain. MEG enables us to examine spatio-temporal characteristics of cortical activities by its high temporal and spatial resolution. In this paper, we reviewed recent MEG studies for neural mechanisms of reading. First, we described the relation between the left superior-temporal cortical area and generation of the N400 component of event-related brain potentials. Second, we discussed the role of the superior-temporal area in reading within the framework of the dual-route model, which assumes two independent routes from letters to sound : lexical and non-lexical routes. As a result, we suggested that the dual-route model for the neural mechanism for reading is supported, and that the left superiortemporal area is involved in the non-lexical route in the dual-route model. Finally, we discussed future directions of the MEG study. (Japanese Journal of Physiological Psychology and Psychophysiology, 23 (1) : 39-51, 2005.)
