The complications and treatments in 155 patients undergoing PTCD encountered between 1976 and 1984 are reported.<br> The methods of PTCD and the rates of complications are:<br> (1) Two cases out of 26 PTC-PTCD (7.7%).<br> (2) Three cases out of 77 ERCP-PTCD (3.9%).<br> (3) Five cases out of 41 US•PTC-PTCD (13.2%).<br> (4) Three cases out of four US-PTCD (75%).<br> (5) Two cases out of seven others-PTCD (28.6%).<br> Complications were found in 15 cases (9.7%), five cases of catheter dislodgement (3.2%), one of catheter dislodgement+intra-abdominal bleeding and bile leakage (0.6%), three of intra-abdominal bile leakage (1.9%), four of hemobilia (2.6%), one of intra-abdominal bleeding (0.6%), and one of shock (0.6%).<br> Different diseases did not show any definite difference in the rate of complications. But among the complications, five out of the six cases of catheter dislodgement were cholangiocarcinomas. It was considered that the tube was not inserted sufficientry into the bile duct.
