Abstract

It is effective to use buckling restrained braces (BRBs) to protect reinforced concrete (RC) frames against major earthquakes. It is necessary to minimize the deformation in the connections for BRBs in RC frames in order to make the BRBs more effective in dissipating earthquake energy. In this study, a detail of connecting BRBs to RC frames is suggested and verified through subassemblage tests. In the test, each subassemblage includes an RC part and a gusset plate for the BRBs. The BRB force is simulated by forcecontrolled actuators. The test results indicate that the influence of the deformation loss in the connection on the performance of the BRBs is negligible. In the last part of this paper, the shear strength of the RC cotter, part of the suggested connection, is evaluated through component tests. A strut-and-tie model is suggested to estimate the shear strength based on the test observation.
