Abstract

Gel samples were prepared with agar and xanthan gum-locust bean gum and the rheological properties and network structures of the gels were measured. Gels including acetaminophen were also prepared and the dissolution of the acetaminophen from the gels was evaluated. When the concentration of the gels increased, the breaking stress increased in a concentration-dependent manner, while the distances between the crosslinking points of the gels became shorter. However, a relation between the breaking stress and the distance between the crosslinking points was not found by varying the kind of the gels. It is found that the difference of the gel structure decides the mesh size of the network. As a result of the dissolution characterization of acetaminophen from the gels the dissolution speed was found to be slower in xanthan gum-locust bean gum gel than in agar gel and this implies that it depends on the mesh size of the gels. This study shows that drug release is possibly controllable with the natural polymer gels by adjusting the mesh size of gels.
