Abstract

Dynamics of seedbank and seedling emergence of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in wheat-soybean double cropped fields under both a tilled and no-till system were investigated. Experiments were conducted in three fields that were naturally infested with Italian ryegrass. In August (after soybean sowing), the seeds in the no-till treatment were highly concentrated near the soil surface (91-97% at 0-5cm depth), whereas in the tilled treatment, many seeds were distributed deeper in the soil (44-51% at 5-10cm depth). The estimated seedbank in August was similar between no-till (3,160-9,460m-2) and tilled treatments (3,020-8,120m-2), but the seedling emergence dynamics was markedly different. In the no-till treatment, 36.8% of the seeds emerged during August to November (before wheat sowing), whereas in the tilled treatment, only 9.6% of the seeds emerged. During this period, the seedbank depletion was caused mainly by emergence. In contrast, the factors causing the seedbank depletion during winter were emergence and death, and in particular, the seeds at 5-10cm depth in the tilled treatment were depleted by death. Seedbank depletion rate from August to May in the following year (before the ryegrass seed shed) was 90-94% in both treatments.
