Numerical analysis of blood flow in the left ventricle partially supported with a continuous flow pump

The ventricular thrombus has been reported as a major cause of thromboembolic complications during cardiac support with ventricular assist devices (VAD). In order to clarify the blood flow in the left ventricle (LV) supported with a continuous flow type VAD, we calculated the flow by means of computational fluid dynamics. In this study, the blood flow simulations were carried out taking the ventricular wall motion into consideration. The shape of a LV cavity was simplified and the computational model was constructed. The LV cavity shape was periodically deformed according to the equations expressing the LV wall motion. The influence of the type of VAD, LV ejection fraction (EF) and pump performance on the intracardiac flow pattern were investigated. The calculation results indicate that the major blood flow pattern differs according to the type of VAD. In the low EF condition, low flow speed region is formed around the aortic valve.
