Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the palatability of cat food to which peptide materials had been added. Peptide materials were prepared by hydrolyzation of protein from chicken or bonito meat by papain and used as pet food materials. Materials using chicken or bonito not treated with papain were also prepared for comparison with peptide materials. Cat foods were made using each material. The palatability of the cat foods was evaluated by three tests. The first test was a comparitive test of leftover weight when changing to the food with chicken peptide material from normal food. The average amount of leftover normal food for 4 days before switching was 12.6 g/day, whereas the average amount of leftover food for 4 days after switching to the food with chicken peptide material was 3.0 g/day. The reduction in the amount of leftover food after switching indicated that the food with peptides material was more acceptable for cat. The second test was carried out to compare the amount of the food with peptide material and the food with untreated material. Average intake was not significantly affected by addition of peptide material. However, in third test to observe which food is first eaten, most cats first began to eat the food with chicken or bonito peptide materials. The results showed that the food with peptide material prepared in this study has excellent palatability and that peptides obtained from chicken or bonito meat by papain are useful as pet food materials.
