Abstract
In this paper, an effective method for designing structures by using a cellular automaton is presented. This is a simple concept of self- organization of structural systems. The proposed method conceived from properties of neuron is sufficiently simple to solve the topology optimization problem just as the pure 0-1 problems, yet sufficiently complex to express a wide variety of complicated topology. The effectiveness of the present method is demonstrated through numerical example of the typical topology optimization problem of structures under periodic forces.
